The Long and Short of It: Dog Rescue.

We are a non-profit group of volunteers, based in North Norfolk, UK. We work with our partners in the city of Nizhnevartovsk, Siberia to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home dogs from the streets.

The dogs we work with have usually already been caught as strays and are then taken to the city’s municipal kennels - as per the city’s program to reduce the number of stray and unwanted dogs. The dogs here are neutered and then released back onto the streets after a few days.

Unfortunately, the kennels are very basic, and not a safe place for those more susceptible to disease. The younger dogs often fall ill and don’t survive there. Those that do return to the streets are faced with other difficulties. Life there is extremely hard. Temperatures in Siberia regularly reach -40C during the very long winters, and many dogs freeze or starve to death. Others may be hit on the roads or train tracks and sadly, they can also fall victim to cruelty: trapping, poisoning, shooting, and other horrendous fates are not uncommon.

Because of this, we strive to rescue as many as we possibly can but with limited space, it is difficult to take everyone. We currently, therefore, dedicate our efforts to those who are less likely to make it once released back onto the streets. The young, the old, those requiring medical attention, and the disabled are all taken into our care. Our precious dogs then receive all the care and veterinary checks they need, before heading off to their forever homes!
